DESCRIPTION

The Westwood Neighborhood Greenway is located in Council District 5 on city-owned parcels on the north and south side of the Metro’s Exposition Light Rail between Overland Ave and Westwood Blvd. The project diverts and cleans stormwater flows and urban runoff (wet and dry-weather) from the Overland storm drain (located in the east side of the area) while providing an island of native habitat for birds, butterflies, and other animals next to one of the nation’s busiest light rail lines. The project improves the water quality of stormwater and dry-weather runoff entering the Ballona Creek to help meet the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) limits required by the Clean Water Act and regulated by the Regional Water Quality Control Board, while providing wildlife habitat and open green space with recreational, educational, and environmental benefits for the community in an urban area.

The project is at substantial completion with Phase I completed and Phase II in the final design phase.

  • Phase I included the design and construction of the Greenway, including two vegetated streams that intercept and divert runoff flow for cleaning, landscaping of native plants, river boulders and trees, and a walking trail.
  • Phase II will include: Provide access for maintenance needs on the northside and southside of the project area, installation of remote monitoring system, provide SCADA integration to the Venice Pump Station for remote operation, provide ADA access on the northside of the project area, and additional shrubs on the northside of the project area.
