Avalon Green Alley

AVALON GREEN ALLEY (NORTH)

Project Location

The Avalon North Green Alley Project is located in Los Angeles City Council District 9 at 441 East 52nd Street in a residential neighborhood in the South Los Angeles community. The project site is a T-shaped alley bordered by 51st Street on the north and 52nd Street on the south, by South Avalon Boulevard on the east and Towne Avenue on the west.

Project Description

The Avalon North Green Alley Project diverts storm drain flow from a 2.48-acre area into permeable interlocking pavers that allow the runoff to flow into an underground infiltration trench and dry well system where it infiltrates into the ground.  In a normal wet season, this project has the potential to capture, treat and infiltrate 750,000 gallons of stormwater.

This is a joint partnership between LA Sanitation and Environment and Trust for Public Land. The project assists the City of Los Angeles in meeting federal Los Angeles River water quality standards. This project’s dry wells and infiltration trench help to remove pollutants such as trash, bacteria, metals and nutrients. In addition, the Avalon North Green Alley Project provides valuable green space with features such as vines and trees and educational opportunities in the form of signage and artwork in the form of poetry. A community green team provides oversight, maintenance and care for the green alley.

The project was completed in October 2016.
