Accomplishments and Activities

One Water LA has achieved unmatched success in providing the framework for City departments, regional entities and stakeholders to work together on the big water picture – water supply, water uses, environmental needs, and long-term challenges and solutions. Accomplishments and activities underway include:

Education and Sustainability
  • A stakeholder-shaped plan, and increased stakeholder awareness of the City’s water challenges based on participation in numerous workshops and meetings focused on making Los Angeles a more water-resilient city.
  • Creation of the One Water LA curriculum for LAUSD.
  • Partnership with Charter Schools for their "Young Citizens Artist Project" challenging students to create new ideas to meet the City's current water challenges and protection of public health.
  • Partnership with Pepperdine University MBA students to develop marketing plan for One Water LA.
  • An LA River Flow Study that will inform future studies to help balance water supply and LA River needs.
Integration
  • 39 Policy and Program recommendations designed to remove barriers to integration and increase efficiency.
  • Water Balance Tool designed to help city managers evaluate new water management strategies.
  • Funding Strategies and cost-sharing opportunities to leverage existing dollars and maximize public investments.
  • Approaches to update City design manuals and specifications to be climate resilient for capital projects.
Stormwater and Urban Runoff
  • A stormwater and urban runoff facilities plan that incorporates water supply, water quality, and flood protection, and identifies more sustainable and resilient green infrastructure.
  • Identification of dry weather flow diversion opportunities to improve waterway quality and increase recycled water availability.
  • Strategies and projects to maximize stormwater capture that consider water quality, flood risk mitigation, and water supply benefits.
Recycled Water / WasteWater
  • Modified City engineering specifications to encourage recycled water in concrete mixing.
  • Recommendations for potable reuse and other opportunities to increase water recycling.
  • A wastewater facilities plan to prepare for the range of future water reuse scenarios for the City’s four water reclamation plants.
  • Analysis of opportunities for new satellite water reclamation plants to create a distributed system of recycled water production.

Young Citizen Artists Project

One Water LA has partnered with Charter schools and the Los Angeles Unified School District on the Young Citizen Artists Project to inspire students to creating new ideas and solutions to capture, conserve and reuse water at their local schools, neighborhoods and community.

Students from the schools have presented their final projects at the Los Angeles City Hall to a panel of City planners from the L.A. Mayor’s office, the Board of Public Works and LA Sanitation.
