Pretreatment Programs

About IWMD's Pretreatment Programs

ABOUT

Pretreatment programs have the goal of:

  • eliminating pollutants;
  • reducing the amount of pollutants; or
  • changing pollutants to a less contaminating state
prior to, or in lieu of, discharging them into the sewers, storm drain system or the waters of the state.

Pretreatment can be obtained by physical, chemical or biological processes.

PRETREATMENT PROGRAM ACHIEVEMENTS

Heavy Metal Loading Reduction to the Water Reclamation Plants

The success of the pretreatment program is exemplified by the dramatic reduction of total heavy metal loadings to the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant as graphically shown in the following figures.

Reduced Sewer Overflows

The success of the Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Control Program, in conjunction with LASAN's Wastewater Collection System Division's aggressive sewer cleaning and maintenance program has reduced the overall FOG-related sewer overflows by 96% since 2000.
