What We Do

The primary responsibility of LA Sanitation (LASAN) is to collect, clean and recycle solid and liquid waste generated by residential, commercial and industrial users in the City of Los Angeles and surrounding communities. These services, coupled with Liveability Services to unhoused Angelenos and citywide cleanliness encompass the bulk of our work.

Serving over four million residents with approximately 3009 dedicated professional, technical, administrative, craft, clerical and service personnel, LASAN’s mission is to protect public health and the environment, enhancing the quality of life in all Los Angeles neighborhoods.

LASAN plans and administers the Solid Resources Program, Clean Water Program and the Watershed Protection Program. These programs all contribute to and build upon our overarching program of environmental sustainability, coupled with environmental justice, which also includes:

  • Climate change
  • Greenhouse gas emission monitoring, reporting and reduction
  • Green infrastructure and urban greening
  • Renewable energy
  • Brownfield remediation
  • Prop O and Measure W
Through these essential programs, LASAN delivers a triple bottom line of economic, environmental, and social benefits that sustain the quality of life in Los Angeles. LASAN has hired over 100 staff in the last fiscal year, alone, from social and workforce equity programs including Clean LA, Workforce Equity Demonstration (WED), Targeted Local Hire, and Bridge to Jobs.

If you have any questions about our services, please call our 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489.

A watershed is an area where runoff drains into a creek, river or other body of water. LA has four watersheds. The goal of the watershed program is to protect the beneficial uses of receiving waters while complying with flood control and pollution abatement regulations.
