The Laurel Canyon Boulevard Green Street Project is located in Los Angeles City Council District 7 in the community of Pacoima. The project is located on Laurel Canyon Boulevard between Terra Bella Street on the north and Kagel Canyon Street on the south.
 
Project Description
 
The Laurel Canyon Boulevard Green Street Project captures and treats storm water from a 123-acre area and then infiltrates it into underground aquifers. In a normal wet season, this project has the potential to capture and infiltrate more than 13 million gallons of storm water into groundwater basins, enough to provide water for 100 single-family homes for a year.
 
The Laurel Canyon Boulevard Green Street Project includes a series of vegetated infiltration bioswales and dry wells located along the northeast side of Laurel Canyon Boulevard. The bioswales and dry wells capture, treat and infiltrate stormwater runoff and replenish the San Fernando Valley Groundwater Basin. The project also improved sidewalks and gutters and mitigated localized nuisance flooding.
 
The Laurel Canyon Boulevard Green Street Project was completed in June 2017.
 
Project Benefits
 
The project’s water quality and community benefits include:

• Improves water quality in the Los Angeles River watershed
• Increases groundwater recharge of the San Fernando Valley Groundwater Basin
• Reduces the amount of pollutants such as bacteria, trash, nutrients and metals entering the Los Angeles River
• Mitigates localized flooding during rain events
• Provides aesthetic enhancements to the neighborhood and improved pedestrian access at Pacoima Middle School
• Assists the City of Los Angeles in meeting federal water quality standards

 
Project Funding
 
The total project budget was $3.7 million with major funding provided by the State Water Resources Control Board’s Proposition 84, Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
