California law (AB 939) required all cities and counties to reduce the amount of waste they sent to landfills by 50% by the year 2000. The City of Los Angeles met and surpassed that goal.
The diversion of green waste has helped in doing that. Green waste is waste from your yard and garden, such as grass, leaves and branches.
Griffith Park green waste--grass, leaves and clippings are blended and composted with zoo doo (collected from herbivores such as elephants and zebras) and biosolids at the Griffith Park Composting Facility. The final compost product is then used in Griffith Park.
The Harbor Yard Trimmings Facility is currently located at the Gaffey Street Landfill and is utilized for recreational purposes and mulching.
Our Mulch Giveaway program is available to all LA Residents. LASAN is "closing the loop" by providing free quality mulch at locations across the City. NOTE: Bring your own supplies including shovels, containers or a pickup to load as much mulch as you need.
The US Composting Council is a national, non-profit trade and professional organization promoting the recycling of organic materials through composting. It's the only national organization committed to the advancement of the composting industry.
