TIWRP Advanced Water Purification Facility

Advanced Water Purification Facility - Phase I

In 2002, TIWRP completed construction of the Advanced Water Purification Facilities (AWPF) which consists of microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and advance oxidation disinfection systems. The AWPF produces highly purified water that can be used as a potable water replacement in industrial applications throughout the region. This purified water has lessened the demand for imported drinking water while at the same time protecting water quality in local wells by provide water used to address saltwater intrusion. The AWPF came online in 2006 and TIWRP began producing approximately 5 MGD for injection into the Dominguez Gap Barrier to protect groundwater from saltwater intrusion.

Advanced Water Purification Facility - Phase II

Phase II of the AWPF project increased the advanced water treatment capacity to 12 MGD to allow additional water to Dominquez Gap Barrier and replace current potable water uses at TIWRP and in the Harbor area with purified recycled water. The AWPF expansion doubled the amount of recycled water that the plant can provide to the Dominguez Gap Barrier from 6 MGD to 12 MGD. The expansion, completed in 2017, included new microfiltration and reverse osmosis systems and the addition of an advanced oxidation process, which uses ultraviolet light and sodium hypochlorite for disinfection. In addition to supplying recycled water to Harbor Area industrial users, the purified water is used to replenish evaporation losses at Machado Lake.
