Project Location

The Ballona Creek TMDL Project is sited in two locations and is incorporated into two existing LA Sanitation facilities. Low Flow Treatment Facility 1 (LFTF1) is located in Culver City, adjacent to Ballona Creek. Low Flow Treatment Facility 2 (LFTF2) is near an existing water quality monitoring facility in Marina Del Rey adjacent to the Sepulveda Channel.

Project Description

The Ballona Creek Watershed is approximately 128 square miles and highly urbanized. It includes 540 acres of downstream wetlands, a unique and precious resource for Angelenos. Water quality in Ballona Creek and its related tributaries is impaired by pollutants such as trash, metal, bacteria, and pesticides due to the watershed’s large, dense population and its impervious ground surface that prevents runoff from infiltrating into underground aquifers.

The Ballona Creek TMDL Project is a watershed-wide multi-benefit project that addresses these impairments, focusing on objectives that significantly improve water quality and protect public health; enhance the local ecosystem, downstream wetlands and estuaries; provide for enriched recreational experiences; and result in community investment and educational opportunities for the local community.

The project’s first facility, Low Flow Treatment Facility 1, treats up to six million gallons per day (MGD) of polluted dry-weather flow and releases the clean water back into Ballona Creek. Low Flow Treatment Facility 1 will also divert and convey up to 23 million gallons per day of polluted dry-weather flow to LA Sanitation & Environment’s Hyperion Water Reclamation Plan for treatment and beneficial reuse and recycling.

The project’s second facility, Low Flow Treatment Facility 2, treats up to 1.3 million gallons per day of polluted runoff and releases the clean water back into Ballona Creek.

Diversion of the polluted urban runoff would take place continuously during dry weather only. The two facilities will not operate during wet weather.
