Project Location

Located in the Mesa Heights of South Los Angeles in the Ballona Creek watershed, the Project is a multi-benefit endeavor that provides benefits to residents, pedestrians and local businesses while improving neighborhood aesthetics.

Project Description

The Angeles Mesa Green Infrastructure Corridor Project is a proposed regional Safe Clean Water Program-funded project led by the City of Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment. The goal of the Project is to improve local water quality, mitigate residential flooding, improve air quality, reduce the heat island effect, and create appealing green spaces for residents to enjoy year-round.

Green Infrastructure Corridor Elements

The term “Green Infrastructure Corridor” is a relatively new concept gaining momentum in stormwater management and is being proposed in many new Safe Clean Water Program-funded projects here in LA. The methodology found in Green Infrastructure Corridors goes far beyond the idea of simply planting more trees and foliage to create a green street. It expands the idea with nature-based solutions that capture, treat and infiltrate rainwater at its source, transforming a traditional public right-of-way into a greener street and a stormwater smart neighborhood.

Project Goals and Benefits

The green infrastructure in the Angeles Mesa Green Infrastructure Corridor Project will create water quality, water supply and community benefits with the following:

  • Installs 30 underground dry well systems to capture and infiltrate rainwater from a 162-acre drainage area
  • Captures and infiltrates more than 21.8 million gallons of rainwater annually during a normal rainy season plus 25.7 million gallons of dry weather runoff
  • Removes 100% of trash, 71.4% of zinc and 84.6% of bacteria from captured stormwater runoff
  • Plants approximately 120 new trees (primarily California-native species), which upon maturity, will provide an additional 60,000 square feet of new tree canopy and will remove approximately 11,400 lbs of carbon from the Los Angeles atmosphere annually.

Project Funding

The total budget for the Angeles Mesa Green Infrastructure Corridor Project is $8.2 million. The project is funded by the Los Angeles County Safe Clean Water Program.
