The City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Sanitation (BOS) is responsible for managing city-wide curbside residential waste collection and disposal. The following map outlines our service boundary and wasteshed areas which illustrate how waste is managed in the City of Los Angeles.

BOS has 2,800 employees that are dedicated to serve the residents and businesses
of the City of Los Angeles. Our mission is to find economical and socially
responsible ways to manage our municipal solid waste resources. This includes
diverting a large percentage of recyclable materials for reuse and studying
new methods of converting solid waste to renewable energy sources.
The City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation is a separate agency from Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. The City of Los Angeles is responsible for only the areas located within the City boundary limits. However, due to limited land available for landfills and environmental challenges the City disposes its solid waste primarily in a landfill located between City and County limits. The City and County of Los Angeles are in agreement that selecting a new landfill site within our City and County limits is no longer acceptable since solid waste can be better managed with alternative technologies processes. Therefore, both agencies are focusing resources on identifying Alternative Technologies to divert a significant amount of municipal waste from existing landfills. Currently, the County is also conducting a similar study to the City’s ongoing Alternative Technologies Study. http://ladpw.org/epd/tf/conv_tech.cfm
