Hyperion Treatment PlantConstruction ProjectsPrimary Battery Odor Control Upgrades
In an ongoing effort to improve relations with neighboring communities and to reduce costs to the City, the bureaus of sanitation and Engineering are committed to seeking new ways of controlling odors at the Hyperion Treatment Plant. The Centralized Primary Odor Control Facility will treat foul air from the four primary batteries: A, B, C, & D at Hyperion and will reduce odors by providing a higher ventilation rate and by treating the foul air with new, more efficient three-stage wet chemical scrubbers. The centralized facility will replace existing odor control facilities, which currently treat these foul air sources. The entire odor control system will consist of a network of above ground ducting, fans, wet chemical scrubbers, a forty foot dispersion stack, and a chemical supply system. The costs of treating foul air will be reduced by efficient chemical usage, reduction of facilities, reduction in scrubber plugging, equipment standardization, and the elimination of carbon adsorbers. The process begins with foul air being drawn from beneath process covers of the various foul air sources by six, 20,000 cfm fans. The foul air collection system will be balanced by dampers located at each collection point and other dampers, located on the main legs of the collection system. The flow will be discharged into six, three-stage wet chemical scrubbers. The H 2S will be removed from the air stream to a high percentage in the scrubbers. The scrubbed air is discharged from the scrubber to a common header. The flow is then diluted with fresh air at a 1:1 ratio before being discharged from the 40-foot dispersion stack. The centralized odor control project will be implemented in the following phases: Phase I Phase I will provide odor control for PBA, PBB, PBC, and the Primary Effluent Channels. Three 20,000 three-stage scrubbers will be purchased and installed. The existing Primary Effluent Channel Scrubber will be relocated to the Centralized Facility. The facility will have three duty scrubbers and one standby scrubber. The combined process flow will be 60,000 cfm. Phase II Phase II will add three more scrubbers to the Centralized Facility for a total system capacity of 120,000 cfm, using 6 duty + 1 standby scrubber. Phase II will construct ducting to connect Primary Battery D, Intermediate Pumping Station and Primary Sludge Pump Station to the Centralized Facility. This will require additional pipeways for crossing streets. Ultimate Phase The Ultimate Phase will incorporate foul air flows from the Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) Thickening Facility. No project is planned at this time; however, this additional flow should be taken into account during the design. It is anticipated that the additional flow from WAS Thickening will be 20,000 cfm. |
