Thirty-four high school students from
schools within the City of Los Angeles
Wastewater Service area participated in the
“2011 Sewer Science Competition” on May
27, 2011 at the Media Center in Los Angeles,
California. Sewer Science is an interdisciplinary
microbiology, chemistry, physics
and environmental curriculum designed to
stress the importance of pollution prevention
to high school students.
The goal of the
competition is to encourage the students to
practice what they learned in the classroom
by constructing a “model” of wastewater
treatment facilities using
recycled materials or by
producing a video with the
theme “Minimize Wastewater
Pollution”.
This year, 13 models and 9
videos were entered into the
competition. The entries were
evaluated based on creativity,
originality, thoroughness, skill,
and teamwork (for models only).
A panel of judges composed of
representatives from the City and private consulting firms interviewed the
students about their entries and the
concepts they learned from the sewer
science program.
The City of Los Angeles is pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 Sewer Science Competition.
