Significant Industrial User: Federal Categorical
IUs are classified as either as Significant Industrial Users (SIU) or an LIU (Local Industrial User).
An SIU is defined as any IU conducting processes subject to EPA Federal Categorical Pretreatment regulation, or any IU that discharges an average of 25,000 gpd or more, or any IU designated by the City as an SIU because of potential adverse impact to the sewer system.
If the preliminary information indicates that the IU is a potential SIU, a joint audit by inspection and engineering staff will be conducted. During the joint audit of the IU facility, inspectors gathers the basic information regarding the IU while the permitting engineers examine in detail the industrial unit processes, sources and volume of wastewater, pretreatment system, etc., required to create the important SIU Fact Sheet.
Certain industries fall into the categories regulated by the National Categorical Standards as defined by the Federal Code of Regulations FIRST and SECOND part. They are designed as Categorical Industrial Users and are required to obtain a Permit.
