  The Ash Institute's announcement recognizes the TIRE project as one of the top 50 programs representing the best practices in government innovation on City, county, tribal, state and federal levels.
   
August 28, 2008 State Law Prohibits Disposal of Sharps in Regular Trash Containers
  The City of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Sanitation reminds residents that effective September 1, 2008, Senate Bill 1305 makes it illegal to dispose of home-generated Sharps in the regular trash. Sharps such as needles (hypodermic, suture), syringes, lancets, endo files, prefilled pens, etc. should not be disposed of in the regular trash or flushed down a toilet but rather be brought to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center or Mobile Collection Event.
   
July 15, 2008 Education Targets Source Separation to Improve Diversion Rates of Household Waste
  The City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation, in partnership with the Community Development Department, today announced the participation of sixty students in a six-week paid internship program. The program goals are to maximize the diversion of recyclables from landfills and to minimize the contamination of collected materials in order to sustain renewable resources of a better quality and to lower disposal costs.
   
June 28, 2008 Sanitation Open House In West Los Angeles Sets Record Attendance
  More than 1,900 residents attended the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works Bureau of Sanitation open house in West Los Angeles. Scores of families with children came to take a first hand look at the variety of sanitation collection trucks on display and to learn about city services.
   
June 5, 2008 Sanitation To Collect On Unpaid Extra-Capacity Fees
  The City of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Sanitation will soon begin charging ALL residents who have been remiss in paying extra-capacity fees for their extra trash, yard- trimmings or horse-manure containers.
   
May 19, 2008 Water Quality Project Helps Stop Pollution and Litter from Entering Santa Monica Bay
  The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works’ Bureaus of Engineering and Sanitation are designing a $32.7 million water quality improvement project that aims to help meet Environmental Protection Agency and federal Clean Water Act requirements in the Westchester/Playa del Rey area.
   
May 14, 2008 PHASE 1 OF SWIRP PLAN CULMINATES WITH CITYWIDE ZERO WASTE CONFERENCE
  The Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Sanitation completed the first phase of its Solid Waste Integrated Resource Plan (SWIRP) as more than 300 people attended the Zero Waste Conference on May 3 at The Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels in downtown Los Angeles.
   
April 29, 2008 Third ZeroWaste Citywide Conference and Announcement of Guiding Principles
  The Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Sanitation will host its third Citywide Zero Waste Conference. The conference will focus on the Solid Waste Integrated Resources Plan or SWIRP: a 20-year solid waste planning process to reduce waste in the city.
   
April 28, 2008 Launch of Pacific Coast Highway Website for Construction and Traffic Information
  The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and cities of Los Angeles, Malibu and Santa Monica announced the launch of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) construction information website to serve as a source of information about pending construction projects planned on PCH. The projects are scheduled to begin in spring 2008 with estimated completion in 2011.
   
April 3, 2008 City of L.A. Receives National Environmental Achievement Awards
  The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works Bureau of Sanitation has been selected to receive two National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) National Environmental Achievement Awards in the category of public information and education.
   
March 28, 2008 Board Of Public Works Recognizes 2007-08 Community Beautificaiton Grant Awardees
  The Board of Public Works honored 89 neighborhood groups and community based organizations that were selected to receive this year’s Community Beautification Grants, which were administered by the Board of Public Works Office of Community Beautification (OCB) through a competitive selection process.
   
March 21, 2008 Board Of Public Works Announces “SIX” CityWide Bureau Of Sanitation Open Houses To Promote Recycling And City Services
  The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works Bureau of Sanitation is hosting its 6th annual open house events offered free to the public. Each of the city’s six sanitation yards, in Sun Valley, Northridge, Lincoln Heights/Cypress Park, South Los Angeles, San Pedro and West Los Angeles, will promote recycling fun while providing hands-on educational experiences and informational material on city programs.
   
March 12, 2008 LA City's Sixth Zero Waste Workshop
  The Bureau of Sanitation’s Solid Waste Integrated Resources Plan (SWIRP) to reduce waste in the City of Los Angeles is nearing the completion of Phase 1 with the sixth series of regional workshops beginning this week.
   
February 2, 2008 Second Citywide Zero Waste Conference
  The City of LA Bureau of Sanitation hold its second Citywide conference for all interested in participating to form LA's master plan on how to reduce LA's waste stream to zero.
