TIPS TO LOWER YOUR
SEWER SERVICE CHARGE (SSC)

Conserve water to reduce your water bills this summer.
Residential Customers: Your SSC is not based on your current use.

How can you reduce your use of water?  Check out the general water usage from a national survey and get an estimate of typical water use per h2ouse.orgYour use may vary.  Traduzca esta página con Google o Yahoo!

Between October and April minimize irrigation and all uses of water that do not go to the sewer. Turn off the sprinklers for the winter and water only when needed.

Consider adding (free) mulch or compost to your soil to help it retain water.  Compost brochure in Spanish

Install timers for sprinklers and use sparingly in the winter.   (Also visit www.bewaterwise.com & H2ouse.org - Non-City agencies)

Plant trees to provide shade and water-hardy shrubs to minimize use of waterDWP currently provides 7 free trees to qualifing residential customers.

Retain receipts if you do major landscaping or pool filling between October and April (see SSC Info / RSRP)

Consider installing a drip irrigation system for your trees and shrubs.
(This would help commercial customers year-around on the water & sewer service charges.)

Use a broom instead of washing down driveways, sidewalks or concrete areas.

Use water in a decorative fountains only if the water is part of a recirculation system.

If you must wash your cars at home during the rainy season, use soap & water in a bucket and then rinse off with water from the hose.  It would reduce your WWU to wash your vehicles at a car wash that recycles their water.

All customers: In addition to your domestic meter, if you have a second meter that is only used for irrigation and for which you are being billed SSCs, submit a commercial or residential request for adjustment. See additional commercial information needed.

Consider installing a private water sub-meter if you have a large parcel and you are irrigating it.  (See Cost, Summary, Residential, Commercial and General SSC Info before installing a private water sub-meter because this method of billing may not save you any money.)

ELIMINATE YOUR SSC if your property is entirely undeveloped and/or has water service for irrigation only or exclusively uses a septic tank, cesspool, holding tank or another City's or a County sewer line.   (Check your bill to see if you are being billed SSCs. See sample bill.) You may submit a claim for refund if one or more of these conditions apply.

Fix water leaks.

Commercial / Industrial / Manufacturing customers: Investigate whether your business discharges low-strength effluent or qualifies for a DWP water conservation program.  You may qualify for the low-strength rate.  Open the Low-Strength page and the DWP programs below.
