Vacations and Holidays
To enjoy the Southern California lifestyle and a variety of activities, all employees receive 12 paid holidays each year. Two weeks of vacation are accrued after one year of employment, three weeks after five years, and up to five weeks with additional years of service.
Sick Leave
The City provides you with 12 annual sick days at 100% pay and five at 75% if you are temporarily unable to work due to personal illness or injury. This annual sick time accumulates from year to year. Employees who accumulate more than 800 hours of 100% sick leave will be compensated at one half of his/her current salary for those unused hours in excess of 800 hours annually. All new employees are subject to a 1.45% payroll deduction for the mandatory portion of Medicare (F.I.C.A.) tax.
Health Care
Employees have a choice of four health plans, including various health maintenance organizations and two dental plans. Some of the above plans pay 100 percent of the covered medical expenses for the employee. In addition to paying all of the employees’ portion of the medical and dental plans, the City pays all or some of the portion of the premiums for dependents. Also available are disability insurance at competitive costs and dependent care reimbursement account plans.
Deferred Compensation
The City’s plans offer an opportunity for our employees to create a source of future income to supplement the benefits they will receive from the City’s retirement system. Through these plans, you may defer a portion of your current income and legally avoid paying Federal and California income taxes on the amounts deferred. You will be required to pay Federal and State income taxes annually on your accumulated deferred income and earnings during the years when you start withdrawing those funds. However, after retirement, most employees will pay lower income tax rates than they do during their peak income-producing years.
Retirement
The City has an excellent retirement program designed to provide you with an income for life with a continuation plan for your spouse. City employees contribute six percent of their bi-weekly salary to the retirement plan and do not contribute to Social Security. Public employees who contribute may be eligible to transfer their retirement contributions.

Educational Opportunities
The City’s Personnel Department sponsors a number of complimentary training and development programs for City employees. All of the programs have been customized based on information obtained through needs assessment studies, management employee focus groups, employee survey instruments, and/or recommendations from subject matter experts. Also, more than a dozen universities and colleges in the area offer graduate level programs for those who want to further their education. Among the best known are UCLA, USC, and Cal Tech. In addition, the City offers Tuition Reimbursement opportunities at the State college rates on a case by case basis.
Alternate Work Schedule
City business hours are normally from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday except holidays. Each City department and bureau, depending on its function and the services it provides, staffs its offices for the best possible service to the public. New employees may be assigned the 9/80 work schedule (9 hours per day for 8 working days and 8 hours for 1 working day over a two week period). An employee on this schedule has the same day off every other week. Employees working a 5/40 schedule work 8 hours a day Monday through Friday.
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
The City of Los Angeles provides all qualified employees with Family and Medical Leave, paid and unpaid, up to 4 months per 12 month period for certain family medical conditions, birth/adoption of a child, or foster care.
Leaves of Absence
Leaves of absence with and without pay may be granted at the Department’s discretion to regular, full-time employees to maintain continuity of service in instances where unusual or unavoidable circumstances require prolonged absence. The various types of leaves include educational, personal, longterm illness, military, bereavement, and Jury Duty. |
