"Second Chance Week" Used Professional Clothing Drive

October 2010

The Department of Public Works Bureau of Sanitation kicked-off its used professional clothing drive during Second Chance Week between October 12 to 15 in a recycling campaign targeting City employees. Sanitation’s campaign will support Downtown People Reaching Out (P.R.O.), a nonprofit organization that collects donated men’s and women’s business attire for the homeless. The donated clothes will be distributed to homeless assistance providers Chrysalis and Weingart Center to be used in a jobs program for homeless men and women seeking or maintaining employment in the Los Angeles area.

Ruiz; Bureau of Sanitation Director Enrique C. Zaldivar; Weingart Center Association Program Manager Arthur Burris; and Weingart Center Association Job Developer E. Fernando Gonzalez. The goal of Second Chance Week is to educate City employees about the City's waste reduction, reuse, recycling and Zero Waste efforts while collecting clothes to help the economically disadvantaged and homeless community of Los Angeles. Ambassadors in City Departments have joined the campaign to sponsor collection bins for used professional clothing.

Pictured is Department of Water and Power Chief Administrative Officer Cecilia K. T. Weldon with her donation of clothes at DWP's John Ferraro Building. Other City sponsors include Community Development Department, General Services Department, Housing Department, Department of Building and Safety, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles World Airports, and Department of Recreation and Parks. The Offices of Controller Wendy Greuel and Councilmember Greig Smith are also hosting collection bins. With tremendous enthusiasm and support by City leaders and employees, Second Chance Week on the first day of the clothing drive, collected approximately 180 pounds of used professional clothes. The campaign objective is to collect more than 800 pounds by the end of business on Friday, October 15.
