American Lung Association Clean Vehicle Champion Award

September 2010

Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa seated in one of the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation's clean fuel Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Solid Waste Collection Vehicles.
Sanitation operates the largest municipal clean fuel fleet of solid waste collection vehicles in the country with 403 of the 764 vehicles using clean fuels LNG and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).   American Lung Association of California President and CEO Jane Warner (left) and American Lung Association of California Chair Trisha Murakawa (right) present Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa with the American Lung Association's Clean Vehicle Champion Award.
Since 2000, more than 17 million gallons of LNG have been used by the City's clean fuel Solid Waste Collection fleet, avoiding the combustion of nearly 11 million gallons of diesel. The greenhouse gas emission reduction is equivalent to removing more than 3,000 passenger vehicles from operation for a year.   Bureau of Sanitation Director Enrique C. Zaldivar (far left), American Lung Association of California Chair Trisha Murakawa (left of center), Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa (center), American Lung Association of California President and CEO Jane Warner (right of center), Board of Public Works President Cynthia M. Ruiz (second right of center), and Bureau of Sanitation Assistant Director Alexander E. Helou (far right) together with the American Lung Association's Clean Vehicle Champion Award.
Four state-of-the-art LNG/CNG refueling stations for Solid Waste Collection Vehicles are in operation at the East Valley, West Valley, Harbor and South Los Angeles Collection Yards with a total combined storage volume of LNG exceeding 155,000 gallons--the East Valley Yard is the largest LNG/CNG refueling station in the nation. A new and larger LNG/CNG fueling station at the North Central Yard will be in operation in Fall 2010 with plans for a sixth station at the West Los Angeles Yard underway.    Mayor Antonio R. In 2007, Mayor Villaraigosa unveiled Green LA - An Action Plan to Lead the Nation in Fighting Global Warming which included the plan to convert all of the City's Solid Waste Collection Vehicles to clean fuel. In Fiscal Year 2010-11, 75 clean fuel vehicles will be added to the 403 clean fuel vehicles currently in service.
